Description

The Parent Aide Program of Berkshire Children and Families in Hadley is a strength-based child abuse and neglect prevention program. A trained volunteer provides weekly home visits to one Hampshire County parent. The program encourages parents to set their own goals, and Parent Aides partner with parents to attain them. Parent Aides provide both concrete and emotional support to improve coping and life skills. They help parents learn new parenting skills and develop enrichment activities for the children in the home. Parent Aides assist parents to prevent homelessness, teach parents household management skills, and connect parents to needed community services such as medical and dental care, mental health services, after-school programs and domestic violence support programs. Volunteers attend 18 hours of training before they decide to be matched. Two trainings are done a year, one in the spring and one in the fall. Staff supervise volunteers twice a month in small groups. Volunteers must have cars. Visits to the families are made weekly. Matches usually last a year. Familes are not currently involved with the Department of Children and Families.
