The Dads and Books (DAB) program: A Family Reading Initiative needs volunteers to lead a series of classes designed to help incarcerated fathers of young children develop their skills in reading children’s literature as well as to encourage reading to their children. 028Volunteer Activities: Volunteers will lead literacy-focused classes. The following are samples of session titles: Fun with Letters, Fun with Parents/Children, Fun with Words, and Fun with Telling Stories. The volunteer will gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the different educational values and lifestyles from the incarcerated population. They will also benefit from using specific methods and strategies for helping fathers promote the joy of reading to their children. Time Commitment: 8 to 12 hours monthly, Volunteers must attend a three-hour in-service training workshop before they start.
Time Frame: at least 6 months Availability:
The first Tuesday and Thursday afternoon of each month. Volunteers will serve two hours each day.

Requirements: The desired qualifications in a volunteer include having a mature demeanor, a sense of humor, good reading and writing skills, dependability and promptness. 028About the Agency: The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office mission is to build character, not jails. The MCSO Library system exposes the inmate population to reading, programming and legal information in an attempt to ease tension and promote literacy.

We help homeless families, guide at-risk youth, tutor disadvantaged children, feed the hungry, care for our environment and so much more. Our volunteers address our community's needs through direct service. Hands On Charlotte offers a variety of meaningful volunteer projects that benefits the citizens of Charlotte. We provide volunteers with flexible volunteer opportunities to create positive change. We simplify the process by organizing and promoting dozens of opportunities each month.
