Title: Refugee Career and Financial Coach

Time Commitment - 10 hours a week to be completed over two, 5-hour shifts during regular business hours M-F; minimum of 6 month commitment, 1 year preferred

Overview:

The IRC Oakland is currently in the process of launching the first Financial Opportunity Center in downtown Oakland, CA. This program helps refugees that have been in the country 6 months or longer achieve measurable, long-term economic self-sufficiency. This is completed through offering one-on-one support around career development (moving from survival to professional jobs), personal financial management, and income supports (including public benefits and tax preparation). IRC Oakland is currently looking for 2 volunteers that are interested in working directly with refugees living in the Bay area and are passionate about helping them access better opportunities for their futures. Volunteers will be provided with all necessary training to successfully complete the following activities. But, due to the scope of work completed and training process, we ask for a minimum of a 6 month commitment, 1 year preferred.

Responsibilities

Activities can include: (we work with volunteers individually to identify their interest and strengths from the following list)

Assisting clients in writing professional resumes and cover letters

Providing individual computer literacy lessons around Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Power Point)

Teaching professional soft skills classes, such as networking, interviewing, public speaking, financial literacy, etc.

Outreach to local employers that provide advanced career opportunities

Help clients with personal financial management such as budgets and spending plans

Qualifications:

Minimum of two years of professional work experience

Computer literacy with PC systems and well-versed with Microsoft Office programs

Excellent communication skills (both interpersonal and with supervisors)

Have a strong sense of personal initiative and be able to work independently in a fast-paced office.

Comfortable working in a cross-cultural setting

An interest in international and refugee issues; prior experience with a mulit-cultural setting a plus

Description

The IRC Northern Calfiornia network, which includes offices in Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose, Turlock and Modesto, currently operates several highly effective programs designed to meet a wide variety of refugee and asylee newcomers' needs. We provide our clients with early resettlement support, English language classes, job placement assistance, one-on-one mentoring, community orientation, and immigration services. All programs are designed to help refugees become self-sufficient and productive members of their new communities.

Each local office has great volunteer and intern need to help make our program succesful. Consider volunteering your time to make THE difference in the life of a newly arrived refugee.
