ORGANIZATION: Montana No Kid Hungry

This AmeriCorps position in Kalispell, Montana offers passionate, independent, hard-working candidates a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work on the cutting edge of public health and childhood hunger policies/practices, make a tangible difference in the lives of at-risk students, and gain invaluable experience for their careers. No Kid Hungry AmeriCorps members will be stationed in five high-need communities (Billings, Great Falls, Helena, Kalispell, Missoula) around the beautiful state of Montana to provide on-the-ground support for expansion and innovative reform of school breakfast programs, ensuring that these important programs are successful and sustainable.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: Conduct key stakeholder meetings and fun community outreach events to build support for the changes among school staff and local citizens.

TACTICAL SUPPORT: Provide direct operational and fundraising support to schools during planning/implementation phases.

STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT: Talk directly with kids and collect important student survey data about patterns of participation and preference in school meals, to help shape better programs for the future.

COALITION BUILDING: Engage with local citizens, businesses and nonprofits to build/strengthen anti-hunger coalitions and recruit volunteers.

ADVANCED LEARNING: Highly qualified and self motivated candidates will have opportunities to tailor their work plan to suit their personal interests and professional ambition.

LEADERSHIP ROLE: The member serving in our Helena office will also help with program marketing, promotion, oversight and support on a statewide level.

FALL IN LOVE WITH MONTANA: Spend a year enjoying our friendly towns, rich western heritage, untouched scenery, abundant wildlife, and the world class hiking, skiing mountain biking, rafting, and fishing.

Members must complete 1700 hours of service (roughly 43 40-hour weeks) between Sept. 2014 and Sept. 2015. Living stipend is $13,000.

Montana No Kid Hungry's mission is to end childhood hunger by improving food access, developing and improving resources in delivering nutrition education, and raising awareness of hunger in Montana.

Description

As a Montana No Kid Hungry AmeriCorps member, you will collaborate with schools to increase participation in school breakfast, summer meal, and afterschool meal programs through developing and implementing creative ways to make food more accessible and enticing to students. You will empower kids and their families by teaching cooking classes and delivering nutrition education/food skills in fun and innovative ways (e.g. kids cooking competitions, youth led community dinners, and teaching families how to shop for healthy food on a budget). You will have the opportunity to exercise your leadership skills in a variety of projects including building volunteer networks and mentoring youth groups that will engage in anti-hunger and anti-poverty activities.
