Details: Shake up your work week with a United By Blue cleanup at Penn Treaty Park. End your workday by giving back! Mother Nature will certainly be happy after the hours you will spend making our environment cleaner.

Since this historic site rests on the banks of the Delaware River, it is often littered with a string of styrofoam pieces, plastic bottles, tires, and whatever else gets carried downstream or left there.

We will meet at Penn Treaty Park and have everyone sign in at 5:00pm. It is best to register online, but all volunteers are welcome to show up the night of the cleanup. After registration there will be a quick introduction and project brief. Then everyone will grab a pair of gloves and a trash bag to start picking up garbage that has been washed up or is floating in the river.

During the course for the cleanup we will play 2 exciting cleanup games:

  1. Weirdest Trash Competition - During the cleanup, volunteers look for particularly odd pieces of trash. Each volunteers is allowed to submit 1 piece of "weird trash", which will be voted on. The winner will recieve a United By Blue shirt.
  2. Total Weight Competition - At the end of the cleanup we will weigh all of the trash collected and ask volunteers to guess the total weight. The closest guess will win them a United By Blue shirt!

Why are waterway cleanups important?

Every year there are 14 billion pounds of trash that end up in our world's oceans. The majority of that trash is land based debris that washes and blows into rivers, streams, and bays before floating out into the ocean. Once the trash is out in the ocean it becomes much harder to remove. These cleanups are not only important because of the trash they remove, but they also help raise awareness about the problems of ocean pollution.

Volunteer FAQs

What should I bring?

We provide our volunteers with bags, bamboo gloves, shovels, grabbers, water, coffee and a free breakfast or lunch. You just need to show up in long pants and old closed toed shoes.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

We ask volunteers that be at least 14 years old. Any minor attending our cleanups needs to have a waiver filled out by their parent prior to the cleanup. Click here to download one. Please email cleanup@unitedbyblue.com for further clarifications.

May I bring a friend, spouse, relative, or my entire soccer team?

Yes, yes, yes, and yes. The more the merrier! We don’t put a cap on the amount of people that can give back. However, we like to be prepared to supply and feed as many people as we can, so please let us know how many people are coming with you.

Can I use your volunteer opportunity for service hours?

Absolutely! Any UBB staff can sign off for your hours at the cleanup or we have a verification letter we can give you.

What happens if it rains?

If it sprinkles, it’s still on. Once it starts to thunder and lightning, it’s a completely different story. If Mother Nature is finicky, check our website, facebook, and your inbox the day of the cleanup. We will notify if the cleanup is cancelled.

Will I be getting in the water?

We prefer to stay on land, but volunteers are more than welcome to take a dip if they are so inclined.

How does the cleanup work?

Our cleanups kick off with breakfast, a 15-minute orientation and safety overview, and then we dish out supplies. Depending on the site, volunteers fan out along riverbanks or beaches, removing plastic bottles, bags, chip wrappers, and stryofoam pieces. After volunteers have turned in their full bags in exchange for new ones, we weigh all of the trash. After about 2-3 hours of cleaning, the cleanup concludes with weirdest trash and guess the total weight competitions.
