Standup For Kids--DC is looking for a dedicated volunteer to coordinate its mentoring program! StandUp for Kids is a national volunteer-driven organization dedicated to ending the cycle of youth homelessness. Its mentoring program currently connects 10 homeless students from a middle school in DC with trained and committed volunteer mentors, and we hope to expand this program in the coming school year.

The Director of Mentoring for StandUp For Kids - DC will have overall oversight for the mentoring program, working in collaboration with other StandUp For Kids leadership and Assistant Director(s) of Mentoring.

Specific duties include:

  • Maintaining, updating, and communicating policies and procedures for the mentoring program as needed to incorporate any lessons learned as the program evolves.
  • Working with the Director of Training to ensure that counselor training includes relevant skills for the mentoring program.
  • Periodically leading an additional orientation for new mentors to introduce them to the specific aspects of mentoring not covered in the counselor training
  • Speak with parents of new students interested in participating in the program
  • Maintaining records on mentors and mentees, including initial profiles and reports on meetings
  • Matching volunteer mentors with appropriate mentees following consideration of profiles
  • Consistently checking in with mentors to see how they are working with their mentees and providing guidance on challenges they are facing.
  • Periodically organizing group activities for all mentees and mentors in the program;
  • Seeking ways to evaluate the efficacy of the mentoring program
  • Liaising with other Directors for fundraising, communications, volunteer recruitment, and volunteer management needs;
  • Participating in monthly leadership meetings.
  • Additional related duties as necessary.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate should be an enthusiastic team player able to work effectively with both leadership and volunteers. Candidate should have:

  • Strong leadership ability
  • Previous experience working with homeless or at-risk youth and/or in mentoring
  • Superior ability to plan and manage work with minimum direction
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to volunteer 5 or more hours per week as needed
  • Strong sense of personal integrity
  • Sincere desire to help homeless and street kids
  • Must be able to pass criminal background investigation

Since 1990, we have cared for homeless and at-risk youth by transitioning them from crisis to connection. We give our youth a sense of safety, hope, and belonging through housing support, mentoring, drop-in centers, and street outreach.
