ORGANIZATION: Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainier Region

Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainier Region was established in 1921 and assists individuals with barriers to employment go to work by providing jobs, training, and educational opportunities. The Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainier Region AmeriCorps team focuses on serving economically disadvantaged individuals who receive job training and other skill development services.

The YouthBuild (YB) Leadership/Construction Training Aide assists students in the YouthBuild training program.

YouthBuild is a youth and community development program that simultaneously addresses core issues facing low-income communities: housing, education, employment, crime prevention, and leadership development. In YouthBuild programs, low-income young people ages 16-24 work toward their GEDs or high school diplomas, learn job skills and serve their communities by building affordable housing, and transform their own lives and roles in society.

Essential Duties:

  • Member will be in charge of working with the Leadership Coordinator and Construction staff in developing, monitoring and reporting on youth leadership opportunities in the construction lab and on site.

  • Collaborate with the Leadership Coordinator in developing community service projects for YB students and staff to participate in.

  • Aid in preparation of and co-facilitating of the Job Readiness and Leadership Development workshops

  • Assist with the development of and implementation of the Leadership Council

  • Engage with YBUSA in developing partnerships and seeking opportunities

  • Work with the Leadership Coordinator in creating a YouTube YB page and other media outlets

  • Communicates with construction job site personnel to assess, coordinate, plan, implement, and supervise youth in practicing their skills in real world settings.

  • Help prepare for and facilitate construction and PACT course work.

  • Helps to ensure and monitor construction lab and site safety.

  • Facilitates and oversees youth’s attendance and time in the construction lab and on the construction site by documenting youth hours in the student attendance book.

  • All AmeriCorps members at Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainier Region are required to help organize and participate in team service projects one weekend per month.

  • Assist in documentation of case notes and other file information

Qualifications:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and impliment opportunities and for the young people.

  • A strong commitment to the philosophy of the program: to help young people succeed and reorient their lives, nurture their leadership skills and enable them to make a difference in their community.

  • Ability to establish rapport with and relate sensitively to a multicultural and mulitracial group of young people on a professinal level.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Strong verbal and written communication and organization skills

  • Experince in or willingness to learn group facilitation

  • Demonstarted commitment to a teamwork approach on all projects and activites related to the YouthBuild team

  • High School Diploma or GED

Service Conditions:

The noise level in the construction lab and site is usually loud. There is standing for long periods of time, and heavy lifting.

Requirements:

  • Ability to serve full-time for 10 ½ months (from September 1, 2014 to July 15, 2015)

  • Serve 40 hours a week for a total of 1700 hours over the entire service term

  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident

  • Must be 18 years of age at the start of the service term

  • Must pass required criminal background checks
