The goal of the Illinois SMP Program is to empower Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries to protect themselves from health care fraud. To accomplish this goal, the SMP Program relies on the skills of its volunteers to educate consumers in Illinois about health care fraud.
Illinois SMP Volunteers can volunteer in serveral ways such as:
- Distributing SMP materials and information to sites or at events
- Providing office assistance
- Staffing a table or both to provide general SMP information at events, such as health or senior fairs
- Giving presentations on SMP and health care fraud topics
- Meeting one-on-one with beneficiaries to assist them in reading and understanding their health care statements and bills
SMP Volunteers help spread the SMP message by volunteering in their own communities.

Mission Statement
Our organization is pleased to be a part of the CMS MedicareRx Volunteer Initiative to help people with Medicare get the assistance they may need to benefit from Medicare's new prescription drug coverage. Organizations and volunteers nationwide have come together in the CMS MedicareRx Volunteer Initiative to help people with Medicare understand their options and make an informed, meaningful decision about their prescription drug plan options. The CMS MedicareRx Volunteer Initiative is sponsored by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Administration on Aging (AoA), and is committed to building an official corps of volunteers who are available to help people with Medicare in communities nationwide understand, choose and join a Medicare prescription drug plan if they choose.
Description
Our organization is providing free, one-on-one assistance to people with Medicare and their families via telephone and face-to-face sessions, public education presentations and other programs. Through the CMS MedicareRx Volunteer Initiative, volunteers at our organization will be given the opportunity to work directly with people with Medicare to help them understand their prescription drug plan options and join a plan that will best suit their prescription drug needs if they choose.
