Remember the energy and excitement you felt at the end of the school day? With the help of enthusiastic mentors, The Backyard Boyz program hones in on this enthusiasm and uses it to help young teens accomplish their goals. During the school year Monday through Thursday from 3:20 until 5:30 p.m., Backyard Boyz mentors encourage healthy self-development by providing hope, empathy, encouragement, and compassion, while modeling positive behaviors. Successful mentors are ordinary people 20 years of age or older who provide an extraordinary service as a reliable and stable role model. Backyard Boyz are in grades 6-12.

As you may recall, middle school can be a tough time for all kids--especially young girls. That’s why the Whyld Girls program, with the help of volunteer mentors, aims to provide a safe and positive atmosphere where girls in grades 6-12 can focus on healthy self-development. During the school year Monday through Friday from 3:20 until 5:00 p.m., Whyld Girls mentors provide hope, empathy, encouragement, and compassion, while modeling helping the girls accomplish their goals. Successful mentors are ordinary people 20 years of age or older who provide an extraordinary service as a reliable and stable role model.

Mission Statement

The mission of CFUM is to create a community to support the potential of children, youth, and families through educational success, healthy living, and community engagement.

Description

Children and Family Urban Movement (CFUM) is a 501-C-3 non-profit organization that was incorporated in 1992, but some programs were offered pre-date that incorporation. We offer a large variety of programs for school aged youth and adults and relationships are at the heart of the work at CFUM.

In an effort to make the most of the assets present in the community, we share program and office space with Trinity United Methodist Church and Las Americas de Comunidad in Des Moines, Iowa. We are not, however, a faith-based organization. The neighborhood which we serve is one of the most ethnically and racially diverse neighborhoods in the state. The median income in the area is below poverty level.

CFUM is located on the corner of 8th Street and College Avenue directly across the street from Moulton Extended Learning Center. Enter through the red door on 8th Street and proceed down a couple steps. Our office is located immediately to the left at the bottom of the stairs.
