PURPOSE To enhance the after-school learning environment for elementary school students RESPONSIBILITY Work with Parks staff to support and enhance the quality of after-school programming. Potential duties include assisting in supervising students in their walk from school to the Center, providing tutoring assistance, assisting with snack, and providing programmatic support. TIME COMMITMENT A 2 hour per week time commitment is required, with the opportunity to assist up to five days per week during the school year. LOCATION: Program begins with pickup at Fern Creek Elementary and continues following the conclusion of their walk to Colonialtown Neighborhood Center.

Mission Statement

UCF Walking School Bus partners with local communities to organize safe walking groups for schoolchildren led by trained adult mentors. Groups meet at least once a month to walk to school together along a designated route(s). Benefits include safer pedestrians, increased physical activity, and new friendships. UCF Walking School Bus is a program of the Center for Public and Nonprofit Management in the School of Public Administration at the University of Central Florida.

Description

In Walking School Bus young people walk to school together under the supervision of trained adult mentors. Walking School Bus travel along a pre-planned route, typically no longer than two miles, picking up youth at different locations until they arrive safely at school. Groups can meet anywhere from one morning per month to twice daily depending on community needs.

Our program is currently operating at Brookshire Elementary (Winter Park), Eagles Nest Elementary (Orlando), Indian River Elementary (Edgewater), Lakemont Elementary (Winter Park), Lake Sybelia Elementary (Maitland), Millenia Elementary (Orlando),and Stevenson Elementary (Merritt Island) schools. We will soon begin programming at Fern Creek Elementary and Washington Shores Elementary (Orlando).
