Mission Statement

Our mission is to advance public trust solutions to save the waters of the Great Lakes Basin.

Our goals are to:

Build deep public awareness and to educate decision makers in government, academia, business, and communities about current and future issues, threats and abuses to the waters of the Great Lakes, Public Trust Principles, and how these principles can be implemented to provide a framework for governance over these waters to protect them now and for future generations.

Advocate for the respect of the waters of the Great Lakes Basin, the implementation of public trust principles in our governance of the Great Lakes, the protection of the Lakes themselves, the rich biodiversity they support, and the rights that belong to the people living in the Great Lakes Basin.

Description

FLOW’S policy work is focused on scientific and legal research of relevant water issues and public trust principles to guide sound analysis, policy development and decision making at all levels. Our goal is to deeply educate citizens and decision makers and to advance public trust principles as solutions for the governance and protection of the waters of the Great Lakes Basin. Through the integrity of our work and dedication, our hope is to provide ethical guidelines for decision-makers to protect these freshwaters from current and future threats and abuses.

We seek to advance public trust policies that protect the Great Lakes as a shared commons held in public trust. The public trust doctrine presents a powerful strategy that holds state governments accountable for protecting the water and public uses of it, while ensuring multigenerational stewardship of this unique natural resource that contains some 20 percent of the world’s fresh surface water.
