The John A. Logan College Volunteer Literacy Program's mission is to provide quality literacy services that help adults become better readers and writers. As a volunteer, the time, place, and type of learner you will work with is flexible and according to your preferences. Learners are matched with tutors according to interests and preferences. We have GED classes in Marion, Herrin, Carterville, Du Quoin, Murphysboro, and West Frankfort, but volunteer tutors can also work with individuals from the surrounding communities in our JALC district.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutoring
If you are specifically interested in assisting non-English speaking adults in English as a Second Language, we welcome you to work with adult ESL learners on speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills from basic to intermediate levels covering vocabulary, grammar, citizenship, and U.S. culture.
Training
Training and materials are provided. All volunteers must attend a 1 hour orientation and complete 14 hours of training. We keep records of tutoring hours to submit to the state in order to continue receiving grant money that funds our ability to serve these individuals in our community.

MISSION The John A Logan College Volunteer Literacy Program's mission is to provide quality literacy services that help adults become better readers and writers through the use of trained volunteers. The Literacy program is committed to: *Enabling immigrants and refugees in need of English as a second langugae to achieve their potential in this country. *Providing learners with quality instruction and support services. *Providing volunteers with training and support services so that objectives can be achieved and literacy instruction can be accomplished. *Imroving and strengthening the program's ability to provide literacy services to the community
Description
The JALC Adult Literacy Program provides volunteer tutors to work with adult learners on basic reading, writing, math, and English-as-a-second-language skills. Adult learners live in the community college district, are age 17 or older, are out of school, and have been identified as having a basic skills need through the use of the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) or the BEST Literacy Test. These tests are required by the program's funding agency, the Illinois Secretary of State Literacy Office.
The TABE measures reading/math skills of learners and the BEST Literacy Test measures reading and writing competency in English in a United States cultural context for English language learners.
Volunteer tutors complete an initial training of 15 hours and are also offered additional training and development opportunities throughout the year. Volunteers and learners use a variety of materials throughout the year such as textbooks, workbooks, newspapers, magazines, and other authentic reading materials in order to reach learners' various personal and professional goals. Tutors and learners meet at several different places in the community and also in the Adult Basic Education and GED classes at the community college.
Learners' and volunteers' progress is monitored by the assistant literacy coordinator, who also provides on-going guidance and support to the entire literacy team (learners, teachers, volunteers, coordinators and counselors).
