ZomBeads, a sustainable Mardi Gras throw company owned by the non-profit, Louisiana Bucket Brigade, is looking for interns to help us with our new summer sales strategy.

ZomBeads is a new company creating unique, environmentally sustainable Mardi Gras throws by working with local artists and manufacturers. We make high quality products that give krewes and organizations an opportunity to stand out from their peers. By working locally, we create jobs in New Orleans, and by using sustainable materials, we can lessen our environmental impact. ZomBeads combines business expertise with non-profit ideals to produce compelling and competitive throws that are good for New Orleans' economy and environment.

The Louisiana Bucket Brigade is a 501(c)(3) environmental health and justice organization working with communities that neighbor the state's oil refineries and chemical plants. The Louisiana Bucket Brigade uses grassroots action to create an informed, healthy society with a culture that holds the petrochemical industry and government accountable for the true costs of pollution.

ZomBeads is branching out into various stores across the city as well as art markets and street fairs. We are looking for interns to help manage tabling opportunities at various events throughout the summer. Applicants with past experience in tabling and canvassing are preferred, students and others with training in business or sales are welcomed to apply. Additionally, this applicant would help with product development and sales throughout the Mardi Gras offseason. This would be a part time internship with flexible hours, anywhere from 5-15 hours per week. If you would like to gain experience in sales, marketing, product development, or small business management this summer please email us a resume and a cover letter explaining your interest in the position. Internship is unpaid.

Email resumes and cover letters to erik@labucketbrigade.org.

Mission Statement

The Louisiana Bucket Brigade is an environmental health and justice organization supporting communities' use of grassroots action to become informed, sustainable neighborhoods free from industrial pollution.

Description

The EPA-approved "bucket" is a simple, community friendly tool that fenceline neighbors use to take air samples. Our purpose is to assist fenceline neighbors in their campaigns to make industry accountable for its pollution. We complement the community group by adding a level of technical expertise to their work. We provide this tool and training to community members to monitor and expose industrial pollution as it happens. The more evidence the communities gather, the more power they have to attain their goals.

Taking air samples is a powerful experience for community members who are used to being ignored, overlooked, and disrespected by corporations and government. Dorothy Jenkins, President of Concerned Citizens of New Sarpy, used to call the refinery to complain about the odors. A low ranking operator would tell her not to worry, that the black plume of smoke that billowed for hours near her home was not harmful. Now Mrs. Jenkins has a bucket. When refinery managers and government regulators tell her that there is nothing to worry about, she answers, "Why, then, was there a benzene reading of 14 in my air sample, a reading that violates the state standards?" The bucket gives community members power to hold institutions accountable to provide a safe and healthy environment.
