ORGANIZATION: Foster Grandparent Program

Senior Corp Foster Grandparents

The Foster Grandparent Program places seniors 55 and older into local schools and non-profit agencies to help at-risk children succeed in their education and development. No special training or skills are necessary. What you bring is a lifetime of experience, time to listen to what children want to say and the words of encouragement children need. The seniors serve as a positive role model for the children they serve. Your consistent presence and caring builds trust with the children and will have a positive impact on the development of their character and self-esteem.

Along with helping the children, our volunteers, who must be low-income, also received a tax-exempt stipend to help offset the cost of volunteering. This modest hourly income makes a big difference to those who deserve so much for their efforts.

Mission Statement

When you share your love, time, and experience, you have the power to help a child who needs you. As a Foster Grandparent, you're a role model, a mentor, and a friend. Serving at one of thousands of local organizations - including faith-based groups, Head Start centers, public schools, and other youth facilities - you help children learn to read, provide one-on-one tutoring, and guide children at a critical time in their lives. Put simply, you give the kind of comfort and love that sets a child on the path toward a successful future.

Description

The Foster Grandparent Program was designed to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for low-income persons age 55 or over to offer supportive, person-to-person service to children with special or exceptional needs in health, education, welfare and related subjects.

The Foster Grandparent Program focuses primarily on the relationship between an older person and a child with special needs. It is a mutually beneficial relationship. The program also benefits the volunteer stations where the scope of the regular duties often make it impossible for the staff to give personal attention to individual children to whom this added dimension of care is particularly helpful.

Enabling them to serve without cost to themselves, Foster Grandparents receive a non-taxable stipend, transportation, meals, an annual health wellness exam, and excess automobile and personal liability insurance coverage. Foster Grandparents may volunteer 20- 40 hours per week, up to 2,088 hours per year.
