Volunteer Activities: The library is looking for volunteers to tutor Spanish speaking adult learners in reading and writing to meet self-identified goals such as passing the ABE test or attaining a GED. The mentor will meet with the learner 1 or 2 times each week for 1 - 1 hours each time to teach basic reading and writing skills. Prepare materials to go over with the learner. These materials can be literacy materials and materials that are relevant to the learner’s goal. As a volunteer you will be making a difference in improving literacy with the functional illiterate population the volunteer will gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the different educational values and lifestyles from the incarcerated population.
028Time Commitment: 6 to 10 hours per month after completing required training

028028Availability: Between 8am-11am and 1pm - 4pm Monday - Friday

Requirements: The desired qualification in a volunteer includes having a mature demeanor, a sense of humor, good reading and writing skills in Spanish and English, experience and/or interest in literacy and tutoring, creativity, open-mindedness, dependability, and promptness

Throughout the year, Hands On Charlotte (a program of United Way of Central Carolinas) provides direct volunteer service to the community. We help homeless families, guide at-risk youth, tutor disadvantaged children, feed the hungry, care for our environment and so much more. Our volunteers address our community's needs through direct service. Hands On Charlotte offers a variety of meaningful volunteer projects that benefits the citizens of Charlotte. We provide volunteers with flexible volunteer opportunities to create positive change. We simplify the process by organizing and promoting dozens of opportunities each month.
