We are in need of a volunteer who has a Certified Pet Therapy dog to visit our members. Research shows the benefits of pet therapy are numerous and is a vital aspect of our Anchor House program. Benefits below:
Physical Health:
- lowers blood pressure
- improves cardiovascular health
- releases endorphins (oxytocin) that have a calming effect
- diminishes overall physical pain
- the act of petting produces an automatic relaxation response, reducing the amount of medication some folks need
Mental Health:
- lifts spirits and lessens depression
- decreases feelings of isolation and alienation
- encourages communcation
- provides comfort
- increases socialization
- reduces boredom
- lowers anxiety
- helps children overcome speech and emotional disorders
- creates motivation for the client to recover faster
- reduces loneliness
Our volunteers stick with us; come meet our members and you will know why!!

Mission Statement
MHCC provides a safe environment, promoting wellness, for individuals managing mental health.
Description
MHCC provides opportunities to enhance emotional health through situation-solution discussions and support groups, goal setting and performance sessions, a friendly caring atmosphere, and social activities to assist in problem-solving. We also offer vocational and educational training opportunities such as computer training, cooking, nutrition, creative arts, self-esteem building activities, independent living skills, etc. Social and recreational activities offered include beach/picnic outings, theater, library, physical fitness, sporting events, bowling, visits to local attractions.
Peers support one another in reciprocal relationships. Peers have "been there, done that" and can relate to others who are now in a similar situation. Research has shown that peer-run self-help groups yield improvement in psychiatric symptoms resulting in decreased hospitalization, larger social support networks and enhanced esteem and social functioning.
