It is a time to celebrate people doing extraordinary things through service. Mercer County Programs is looking for dedicated volunteers to join our program. In five easy sessions you can become certified as a tutor in our program and help adults with low literacy skills to learn to read, write and speak English."

Tutoring is extremely gratifying volunteer work and it does not require a special background. Tutors need only be 21 years or older, have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent, and sign up for the five session training course.

Mission Statement

Literacy Volunteers in Mercer County provides free volunteer tutoring to adults, 16 years of age or older, in public buildings throughout the County. The organization strives to assist students to improve their lives in the family, the workplace, and the community, through increased literacy skills.

Description

Three-quarters of the students are receiving help in English as a Second Language. One-quarter are native English speakers, but are reading below the sixth grade level. Tutors must be 18 or older and have a minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent. They take a 21 hour tutor training course provided by the branch, offered once a week for seven weeks, three hours each class. These courses are offered several times a year. Upon completion, tutors are matched with students who are available at the same time and place as they are. Most tutors see their students once a week, offering about 2 hours of instruction at each session. Some matches are one-on-one, some small group, and some small group within a classroom situation. Tutoring opportunities are also available in group conversation classes and computer lab instruction time. Volunteers are also needed in the office. Donations are accepted.
