Event Description:
On Wednesday, May 21st, community leaders and supporters will gather at Solid Ground’s Sand Point campus to dedicate our two newest buildings of housing and to celebrate 40 years of action, innovation, and partnership in King County.

Located in beautiful Magnuson Park, Solid Ground helped to convert decommissioned Navy buildings into housing units for homeless people. We’ve helped provide the case management and other services Sand Point residents need to achieve stability, security and confidence to improve their lives. Since 1999, more than 2,000 people have stayed at Sand Point in their journey from homelessness to stability. We also host several youth programs on site: Friends of Youth New Ground, YouthCare Passages and YouthCare Pathways.

With all of our planned construction now complete, we are able to provide almost 200 units of housing and help more than 175 individuals and more than 250 children. There are several different ways that volunteers can help make this event a success!

Set Up (10:30am to 12pm): Help staff prepare our event space by setting up tables, chairs, scavenger hunt stations, and signage.

Traffic and Parking (11am - 1pm): Help direct guests to designated parking areas - no one likes to be confused about parking! Volunteers will be stationed in pairs at traffic barricades to provide guests with maps and directions to parking areas.

Hosts (11:30am - 1:30pm): Volunteer hosts will act as a liaison between staff and guests, help to direct guests to seating area and restrooms, answer general event related questions, and provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the event!

Clean Up (2pm - 3pm): Stick around for one hour after your volunteer shift to be a Clean Up volunteer, and help staff return our Sand Point Campus back to its normal state after the dedication event wraps up. Tasks will include tacking chairs and tables, gathering trash, taking down signage, and congratulating yourselves on a great event!

Training, lunch, and plenty of breaks will be provided in order to enjoy the music and tours of our Sand Point Campus.

Mission Statement

Our mission... Solid Ground works to end poverty and undo racism and other oppressions that are root causes of poverty. Our vision... Solid Ground believes our community can move beyond poverty and oppression to a place where all people have access to quality housing, nutritious food, equal justice and opportunities to thrive. Our values... Solid Ground is committed to working with compassion, integrity, accountability, creativity and an anti-oppression approach to end homelessness, hunger, inequality and other barriers to social justice. We value collaboration and leadership from the communities we serve.

Description

Our history...

Solid Ground was founded in 1974 by community leaders and concerned citizens of one of Seattle's then most economically devastated neighborhoods, Fremont. Originally called the Fremont Public Association, our services - emergency food bank, clothing bank, and employment program - reflected the desperate needs and determined response of a mobilized and committed neighborhood.

Solid Ground today...

As the scope and severity of homelessness and poverty have increased over the years, so too have our reach to our greater community and our range of services. Now based in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood, our 30 programs and services help more than 60,000 households each year overcome poverty and build better futures throughout King County and beyond.
