BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK: The Development Intern will support The IRC in Los Angeles office by building donor networks, researching and writing grant applications, soliciting and tracking donations, and assisting with refugee advocacy.

COMMITMENT: Intern will have the opportunity to work at least 10-15 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of 3-4 months. This is an unpaid internship.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct research on philanthropy in the Los Angeles area and identify potential funders for IRC programs
  • Assist with grant related research, drafting of grant proposals, and donor tracking
  • Engage with potential public and private funders in the Los Angeles area

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Intern will gain experience in philanthropy research, grant writing and donor relations.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student, or less than one year out of school
  • Experience in development and grant writing preferred
  • Familiarity with public and private funders including Los Angeles based foundations preferred
  • Be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Must be culturally sensitive and respectful of various backgrounds, lifestyles and beliefs
  • Fluency in English required
  • Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies
  • Respect client privacy and treat information as confidential
