Ann Arbor Art Center

The exhibitions gallery at the Ann Arbor Art Center is located on the 2 nd floor of the Center and contains two gallery spaces. The gallery is a contemporary visual arts collaborative that hosts approximately 8 exhibitions per year that feature work created by local, regional, national, and international artists. Its mission is to strengthen public appreciation of contemporary art through exhibitions, education, and community exchange.

The gallery is in search of volunteer gallery monitors during weekend hours only. The gallery hours on the weekend are: Saturday 10-7 and Sunday 12-5.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Greeting visitors to the gallery
  • Record visitor attendance
  • Provide security to the gallery space and the art works
  • Distributing surveys when appropriate, recording data
  • Minimal upkeep of the gallery during shift (dusting, spot checking walls, replacing bulbs, etc)
  • Inspecting art objects, labels, and furnishing for signs of theft and damage
  • Meeting with the Director of Programs before the start of each exhibition to become familiar with the content of the exhibition, exhibition sponsors, dates of exhibition, gallery hours, and special events connected with the exhibition.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS

  • Providing excellent customer service to vistors: answering questions about exhibitions, exhibitions programs, and sharing information (literature) with visitors
  • Studying or reading is allowed when visitors are not present. Supervising the gallery and performing gallery-related duties supersedes other activities. Phone calls are NOT permitted when on duty. All phone use should be kept to a minimum.
  • Monitors on duty represent the Ann Arbor Art Center and are required to dress appropriate and professionally when on duty. Jeans are allowed but discretion is necessary.

THE IDEAL MONITOR

  • Maintains an interest in art and enjoys learning about, talking about, thinking about art and sharing information about art exhibitions
  • Naturally enjoys engaging with the public in the customer service capacity
  • Is extremely reliable and can provide reliable transportation to and from the Art Center
  • Is available to work at least a 3 hour shift (or full day shift) on either Saturday or Sunday
