Best Friends Mentoring Program matches at-risk school age youth with a caring, trained volunteer mentor for role modeling and guidance that will help break the cycle of poverty by role modeling for vocational or higher education, employment and service learning opportunities. The VISTA’s main duties will be in these 4 areas: 1. Recruit & train volunteers to be mentors to youth in poverty. 2. Develop a tutoring program for youth in area elementary schools who are below proficiency and may be English Language Learners. 3. Develop & implement a "gap" summer child care program for school age children. The current program is closed for 4 weeks during the summer and a survey done last year showed that most kids would be spending those weeks home alone because parents cannot afford to take time off work or take vacation. 4. Fundraising to support the above initiatives.

VISTA members commit to one year of national service, at a minimum. They receive a modest living allowance, limited health coverage, an education award or cash stipend upon successful completion of a year of service, childcare assistance if applicable, and many training and career development opportunities.
