Wayne Metro Head Start is a federally funded preschool program for income-eligible families with children between the ages of 3-5 in the cities of Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Garden City, the Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Harper Woods, Highland Park, and Redford. The Head Start Program classroom offers a warm and comfortable environment where young children can learn, grow and develop. Head Start, however, is more than just a preschool. Head Start provides supportive services to the entire family. Parents are encouraged to be involved and have input into all phases of the program. This volunteer position is to assist Head Start staff with recruitment of families into the program.

Responsibilities:

  • Canvas local area community buildings (i.e., libraries, recreation centers, splash pads, etc.) to give out and re-stock Head Start flyers.
  • Attend community events to answer questions and give out flyers regarding Head Start programming.

Qualifications:

  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the position.
  • Positive and professional demeanor.
  • An outgoing and friendly personality.
  • Excellent time management skills.

Time Commitment:

  • All Recruitment Ambassadors are required to undergo training about Head Start program details prior to beginning volunteer opportunity.
  • There are varying recruitment activities to participate in. All require different amounts of time and effort.

Wayne Metro Community Action Agency (Wayne Metro) provides services to help people achieve their goals for Healthy Homes, Upward Mobility, and Family Success. Upward Mobility

  • 4,153 participants increase their financial capabilities through workshops, coaching
  • 2,021 participants receive free tax preparation

Family Success

  • 794 children improve their Kindergarten readiness through early childhood education
  • 610 youth improve academic progress through youth empowerment programs

Healthy Homes

  • 873 households who are at-rick of homelessness maintain housing
  • 2,701 households improve home energy efficiency through home repairs


Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • 15 small Detroit-based organizations assisted with the Detroit Residents First Fund that works to elevate the voices of local Detroiters

Over the last four decades, the Agency’s budget has grown from $100,000 to over $100 million while continuing to maintain a low administrative rate (8%) that allows $.92 of every funded or donated dollar to be utilized for direct client services.
