Area 8th graders will participate in a Financial Literacy Fair in April and May to be held at the Kirkwood Linn County Regional Center in Hiawatha! The students have selected a career and determined their salary and taxes. They’ll come to the fair to face the reality of monthly bills for all of the necessities (transportation, housing, insurance, savings, food, etc.). At the end, they’ll meet with a financial counselor one-on-one to discuss their choices on how they spent or saved their salary!
Would you like the opportunity to interact with students? We are looking for volunteers to help staff the booths. No experience necessary! We’ll train you the hour before the students arrive.
You’ll be amazed at the learning that happens this day as students put their book-learning to practice and the interaction with the students is a blast! This is a great way to see how we’re working together to prepare students for their future!!
Go to www.workplace-learning.org to volunteer and follow the links for the Financial Literacy Fairs.

Mission Statement
Develping our future workforce by connecting business and education in relevant, work-based learning activities for K-12 students and teachers in the 7-county Area 10 region in Eastern Iowa.
Description
Work. Learn. Connect Connecting Today's Students to Tomorrow's Careers
Why we do what we doWe believe in a vibrant community with a workforce ready for a changing world, and we support the next generation as they navigate and connect to our shared future.
What we doWLC connects students and educators from Grant Wood AEA Area X school districts in Cedar, Benton, Iowa, Jones, Linn, Johnson and Washington counties in east central Iowa looking for career information with area business professionals who are interested in preparing our region's future employees.
Students become more prepared for the local job market, and businesses have the opportunity to mold potential employees, creating a hands-on way for students to explore careers while still in high school.
But, that’s not all. Local job experience is key to keeping our best and brightest here, in Iowa. And the on-the-job learning students receive simply cannot be recreated in a classroom.
WLC was founded in 1998 as a not-for-profit partnership of Kirkwood Community College and Grant Wood Area Education Agency serving K-12 students in seven counties. In July 2011, WLC became a self-sustaining, not-for-profit Kirkwood department under the Kirkwood Community College Foundation continuing to provide high quality, age-appropriate career exploration for the K-12 population. WLC coordinates career speakers, career fairs, worksite tours, job shadows, internships, and teacher professional development to help districts meet Iowa Department of Education mandates for Career Development and help area students become better informed in their post-secondary education and career decisions.
