GRANDParenting Again is a new program sponsored by Aging Matters in Brevard and The Sunflower House, located in the Merritt Island Square Mall, designed to help grandparents who find themselves raising their grandchildren. The program contains a component that is focused on the grandchildren being served - it is designed to improve the child's reading skills and academic success. Studies have shown that if a child is not reading well by the end of third grade, the odds of graduating from high school are greatly reduced.
Volunteers would meet twice a month for thirty minutes and work with students in grades one through six, in small group settings. Volunteers will use tools such as hands activities, board games, word puzzles, and books to help student develop and improve their reading skills.
Meeting days and times for the GRANDParenting again program are every first and third Saturday of each month at the Sunflower House, inside the Merritt Island Square Mall, from 11:30am to 12:00 pm.
A three hour training is required and will be provided by the GRANDParenting Again program. Volunteers do pay for the initial cost of fingerprinting, but will be reimbursed by Aging Matters in Brevard.

Make a Difference in Your Community!
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) provides opportunities for people 55 and over to make a difference in their community through volunteer service. RSVP volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through sharing centers, meals on wheels, transportation, United Way, and other nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs. RSVP offers maximum flexibility and choice to its volunteers. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of older Americans with opportunities to help solve community problems and offers supplemental insurance while on duty, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where volunteers are placed.
