COLLEGE PREP MENTOR 2015-16 Overview: South Bronx United is looking for highly motivated, energetic volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of South Bronx youth and provide them with the tools necessary to graduate high school and attend college. College Prep Mentors are matched with SBU high school seniors as they prepare for SAT/ACT and navigate the college application process. Mentors primarily focus on assisting with applications, but may need to provide support with SAT/ACT and Regents exam preparation. Mentors promote the importance of education and serve as positive role models in youths' lives. Dates/Times: September 2014-June 2015 Mondays, 6:30-8:00pm Locations: Urban Assembly School for Careers in Sports, 730 Concourse Village West OR South Bronx United Office, 594 Grand Concourse Responsibilities: Available September - June for weekly Monday meetings from 6:30-8:00pm Attend August Orientation and Mentorship Kick Off Event Work on college research, applications, personal statement, letters of inquiry to college coaches, financial aid, scholarships, regents, picking a school Contact student by their preferred method (phone, facebook, email) before each meeting to remind them about the meeting Be available by phone/ email outside of meeting times to answer questions, revise materials, help with research, etc Provide progress report updates to staff as requested Track student records (application receipts, financial aid confirmations, acceptances, SAT scores) and report to program staff Training/Support Orientations will be held prior to the start of the school year. All mentors will be provided with a mentoring handbook with best practices and SBU staff are always readily available to answer questions and provide support.
