Aloha,
Project Hawai'i, Inc. is a nonprofit organization run 100% by volunteers and solely supported by public donations. Our agency provides a free summer camp for homeless (unsheltered) keiki living in extreme poverty along the waters edge of the Wai'anae Coast.

Our summer camp has several life changing objectives that truly help these chidlren escape their cycle of poverty.

Children who are born into poverty do not have the same options of those raised in "normal" situations. Most of these chidren will never leave the area of which they live. That means they won't even explore their own island wonders, or even know what it means to go to the movies, or other simple pleasures we take for grantite.

In addition to this fact, there is severe educational regression among children who go without physical and mental stimulation or nutritious meals over their long summer break. Statistics show that they can regress the entire school year level, and most children will never reach the 4th grade reading level upon completion of their educational life cycle, weather that leads or gradutaion or not.

Our camp provides these children with a life changing opportunity to learn the life and social skills they need to succeed. Lots of activities, introducing them to the world around them, and of course healthy meals.

Please visit our website for more details about the camp in whole....but we are seeking volunteers to make this a reality for our keiki here on the island.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

1. Meal Support: Volunteers to make and deliver our field trip lunch, or provide a BBQ, or other style lunch at our activity day?

2. Snack & Breakfast Collection Coordinator: We are seeking a group or person who can set up a collection for the snacks/breakfasts we need for the keiki.

3. We are also seeking gift cards for our field trips to allow the children to learn to purchase their own food and eat healty at "fast food" places...since it is a part of reality. We are seeking gift cards from Mc Donald's, Pizza Hut, Jamba Juice, and Pearl Ridge Shopping Center (we go to the food court after our Mini Golf Day).

Lists will be provided to help with the guidelines imposed on us by the USDA.

4. Field Trip Support Coordinators:

We are seeking volunteers to help us secure the entrance fees, so our keiki can attend these wonders of our islands.

This year we are trying to go to the

  • Honolulu Zoo
  • Waikiki Aquarium
  • Pirate Ship
  • Dolphin Education Program by Honolulu Star
  • Other options...I-Trampoline, Mini Golf, Chucky Cheese

5. T-shirt Coordinators:

We are seeking volunteers that can help us with our company sponsorships to assure the overall success of the camp. Companies can have their names on the back of our t-shirts with sponsorships towards our field trip activities.

6. Summer Camp Supply Coordinators:

We are seeking volunteers to help secur e the needs of the children, from outfits, shoes, field trip supplies, back to school items, etc. A list will be provided along with more details.

Mahalo for your time and consideration towards our homeless keiki and their life long success.

Description

Project Hawai'i, Inc., is a nonprofit organization run 100% by volunteers to enhance the lives of children living in poverty situations on the islands of Hawai'i. Our public supported charity works year round to provide necessities to children living in substandard housing situations, such as tents on the waters edge, abandon vehicles, and make-shift structures hidden in the bushes and hills.

Our agency provides children with holiday parties, meals and services for all the major holidays including Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Other monthly services include providing emergency support, hygiene, food, clothing and outreach to the children living in homeless situations on 3 of the islands of Hawai'i, the Big Island (Hawai'i), Mau'i and O'ahu.

Project Hawai'i also provides educational and nutritional programs that include after school reading and tutoring programs and our summer camp activities. Children will also receive full back to school support from new backpacks filled with supplies, new outfits, and shoes. We also provide other educational needs throughout the year.

Project Hawai'i Summer Camp has ran for 15 years and won several dozen awards in nutrition and educational support. This program is our largest endevor and evolves year after to year to include even more learning opportunities to our keiki.
