Mission Statement

Our vision: a world without breast cancer.

Komen Nebraska is one of 120 Affiliates in the U.S. comprising the Affiliate Network of the Komen National Organization. Each Affiliate is responsible for advancing the Komen mission in their service area by raising funds and distributing monies through education, screening and treatment programs. The Komen Nebraska’s service area is 91 of the 93 counties in the state of Nebraska (Thurston and Dakota Counties are serviced by another Komen affiliate).

Komen Nebraska is a primary breast health resource in Nebraska. Up to 75% of net proceeds raised each year by Komen Nebraska stay in Nebraska to provide grants to local organizations through our Grants Program. These funds support breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs across the state. The remaining 25% of net proceeds supports the Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program. Nebraska research facilities at UNMC and Creighton have received over $2.2 million from Komen for breast cancer research since 2009. As excellent financial stewards, general administrative and overhead expenses of the Affiliate, including fundraising expense, are held to less than 25%.

Since 1994, nearly $7 million has been distributed to Nebraska-based breast cancer organizations selected in part, on priority areas identified in the Komen Nebraska Community Profile. The Community Profile helps direct the Affiliate’s grant making decisions to ensure that programs funded will fill gaps without duplicating existing services.

In 2013 the Affiliate awarded $638,969 in Community Grants to grantees across the state. These grants fund services such as free mammograms, rapid diagnostic testing, educational outreach, and financial assistance for women and men going through breast cancer treatment. There is still a large need for services and help because less than half of the requested grant amount was filled - over $1.4 million was requested.

The Komen Nebraska Race for the Cure is the primary fundraiser of the Affiliate. On the first Sunday in October, more and more racers, volunteers and breast cancer survivors come together to raise funds, raise awareness and demonstrate support for those battling breast cancer. The first race was held in 1994 with 1,300 participants, and each year there are more participants - the 20th Annual Race for the Cure on October 6, 2013, saw more than 12,000 contributors in a sea of pink around the CenturyLink. More than 50 local and national corporations sponsor the Komen Nebraska Race for the Cure through corporate funding. The third Central Nebraska Race for the Cure was held on the campus of the University of Nebraska Kearney, with just over 1100 participants on September 28, 2013. In 2014, the Omaha Race for the Cure is on October 5 th, and October 11 th in Kearney.

Our challenge

• Every 19 seconds, a woman somewhere in the world is diagnosed with breast cancer.
• Every 60 seconds, somewhere in the world, someone dies from breast cancer.
• One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
• In Nebraska, an estimated 1,240 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2014 and 200 people will die of the disease.

Our reach

• Susan G. Komen is the largest non-profit source of breast cancer research funding outside of the U.S. government. Komen has touched every major advance in breast cancer breakthroughs over the past 29 years, helping to improve breast cancer survival and quality of life.

• In Nebraska, approximately 33,000 people have benefitted from either educational materials, community outreach programs or a Race for the Cure event (held annually in Omaha and Kearney) during 2013. Komen Nebraska serves 91 of the 93 counties.

Our impact

• Seventy-five percent of Komen Nebraska proceeds stay in Nebraska to fund community-based programs for education, screening and treatment. The remaining proceeds help fund national research efforts.
• In 2013, Komen Nebraska provided $678,000 to 26 nonprofits across Nebraska through its grant programs. Throughout the year, that means:
  
  
  • Nearly 11,000 people learn more about breast cancer through education programs
  • More than 1,000 men and women receive a mammogram
  • More than 2,400 clinical breast exams are performed

• Since 1994, Komen Nebraska has invested $7.9 million in breast cancer education, screenings, treatment programs and research. Since 2009, Komen has given nearly $2.2 million in research funds to Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

• From 2010 to 2012, the percentage of uninsured women receiving a mammogram in Nebraska increased 13 percent.*
