ORGANIZATION: Literacy Network

Are you available to work 8-10 hours each week next semester? Looking for a great way to sharpen your ESL lesson-planning, volunteer supervision and communication skills as you help others in your community? Community Literacy Interns are responsible for the success of their assigned weekly session, which provides one-to-one tutoring for adults hoping to improve their reading, writing or speaking skills in English. In each class, 8 students and 8 volunteer tutors work in pairs on personalized lessons created for each student by the Intern. We are looking for Interns who have experience creating lesson plans and are kind, reliable and interested in working with adults from various cultural backgrounds. We are currently hiring for the following sessions (be sure to indicate for which you are applying):

  1. Monday nights 5:45-8:15pm at Literacy Network
  2. Tuesday nights 5:45-8:15pm at the Allied Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club
  3. Wednesday mornings 8:45am-11:15am at Literacy Network
  4. Wednesday nights 5:45-8:15pm at Literacy Network
  5. Thursday mornings 9:45am-12:15pm at Lussier Center on S. Gammon
  6. Saturday mornings 8:45am-11:15am at Literacy Network

We are now accepting applications for the fall semester; deadline for application is noon August 8.

Literacy Network teaches reading, writing, communication, and computer skills to Dane County adults so they can achieve financial security, well-being and deeper engagement with their families and the community.

Description

Literacy Network assists adults in Dane County who are low-income and who need help improving their literacy skills, whether they are immigrants/refugees learning English, adults reading/writing below a 5th grade level, or folks studying to pass their GED or high school equivalency exam. We offer free group classes and trained volunteer tutors at locations throughout the Madison area. Programs operate on a three semester schedule: spring, summer, and fall, and we recruit interns and tutors every semester.
