Volunteers needed to tutor high school Algebra and Geometry through the AmeriCorps Achievement Connections Math Tutoring Program! Volunteers will serve in partnership with AmeriCorps, the United Way of Dane County, Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District, Madison Metropolitan School District, and the Morgridge Center for Public Service.

You Will:

  • Gain experience teaching and mentoring youth
  • Share knowledge and experience with the community
  • Lead one-on-one tutoring sessions
  • Network with individuals who are passionate about service and education
  • Training provided

The AmeriCorps Achievement Connections program is seeking dedicated and caring individuals to commit at least two hours a week tutoring students in math, with the top priority helping students complete Algebra 1 by 10th grade with an average of a C or better. This could be an opportunity for you to make a difference in the lives of students and give back to the community. We are looking for tutors at High Schools within the Madison Metropolitan School District and the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District.

Never tutored before? Don't worry! Volunteer tutors will go through an on-site training course. Volunteers should be comfortable with math but do not need to be "experts" materials and support will be provided.

Preferred qualification for tutors:

  • Possess strong content knowledge in algebra or geometry
  • Strong desire to teach or mentor
  • Can commit to two hours or more a week of tutoring

Typical tutoring hours: M-Th 8:00-4:30; F 8:00-12:00

Mission Statement

The AmeriCorps Achievement Connections Math Tutoring Program is a partnership with the United Way of Dane County, the Morgridge Center for Public Service, Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District, Madison Metropolitan School District to provide students with individualized academic tutoring and mentoring in order to improve student academic performance in high school and readiness for college and career. The program is aimed at high school students in Algebra or Geometry who would benefit from extended learning opportunities. Our goal is to increase the number of students passing algebra by 10th grade with a grade "C" or higher.

Description

Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.

We are looking for caring and dedicated tutors that can commit at least two hours of tutoring a week to students enrolled in the AmeriCorps Achievement Connections Math Tutoring Program and are proficient in Algebra and Geometry. Tutoring sessions model good study habits by being focused and paced to students' needs. The sessions may focus on only class work and/or basic skills development. All tutors will receive a comprehensive tutoring manual and on-going support and guidance from the AmeriCorps team.

Achievement Connections can be found in Madison West, East, and Memorial High Schools, as well as Middleton-Cross Plains High School.
