Space of Her Own seeks mentors for fifth-grade girls in the City of Alexandria. Each week, mentors and their mentees gather for dinner at the Alexandria Art League. Following a healthy meal, they begin work on an art project taught by a professional artist. Projects range from crafting mirror mosaics to working with textiles to experimenting with photography in the darkroom. At the conclusion of their year together, mentors help renovate the girls' spaces using all of the projects that they have made together throughout the year.
We will be holding our final orientation sessions for the 2014-2015 school year on May 15 and May 29 at the Alexandria Art League's Madison Street Annex at 5:30pm. If you would like to attend either of those sessions, please RSVP to recruitment@spaceofherown.org for all of the details.

Description
SOHO is an art-based organization that serves pre-teen girls by providing yearlong mentoring through engagement in life skills instruction, nutrition and cooking classes and healthful dinners, creative art activities and meaningful community service projects. Each volunteer mentor makes a one-year commitment to the program, which fosters long-term relationships and culminates in the renovation of each girl's bedroom, HGTV-style.
