BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

The IRC has recently partnered with Child Care Aware of America, an organization that will offer refugee and asylee women the training to become licensed child care providers both in their homes, and as teacher assistants in a child care centers.

Volunteer duties:

  • Assess the income and transportation needs of women and families who need to move to appropriate housing
  • Evaluate new housing for its suitability in operating a Child Care business according to MD law.
  • Assist in the search, leasing application and transfer process for families to new housing,
  • Coordinate interpreters

Description

Established in July 1999, IRC-Baltimore resettles approximately 700 refugees of all ages and from over 20 nations out of our Southeast Baltimore office each year. Our mission is to help newly arrived refugees become independent and self-supportive by assisting them with services such as temporary financial assistance, job placement, cultural and community orientation, and referrals for English language study, health, education and social services.
