Mission Statement

To provide healthy food access to members of the Rockaway community as they recover from the impacts of Hurricane Sandy. We distribute free meals to homebound residents and operate a pay-as-you-can relief food truck. We also have two community garden projects in Rockaway, which we manage and maintain, host a CSA and offer workshops on nutrition and other relevant topics.

Description

The Rockaway Rescue Alliance Shore Soup Project is a grassroots community group that formed in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and established a community feeding program. Shore Soup has distributed over 50,000 free healthy meals throughout the Rockaway Community from Breezy Point to Far Rockaway. Our door-to-door delivery service reached a range of different populations including: home bound seniors, families without access to healthy food, individuals living in public housing and affected renters and home owners. Our network of over 400 volunteers prepared our soups from farm fresh produce donated by GrowNYC and other farmers’ organizations.

Shore Soup Project lead and hosted community programs including legal clinics, health information workshops, free farmers markets, CSAs and community gardening projects. Shore Soup Project is currently working to establish SHORE a pay-as-you-can Relief Restaurant which will continue to provide food access to the entire Rockaway Community, and has launched a pilot version of this project: a pay-as-you-can food truck.

Environmental sustainability has always been an important priority for us, because of this, we distribute food by bicycle and tricycle cart, compost our food scraps and primarily use organic ingredients.

Shore Soup Project's work has been recognized with grants from the North Star Fund, Citizens Committee for New York City, The Fund for the City of New York and the Robin Hood Fund and has been widely supported by the community who fully funded our Kickstarter campaign.
