ORGANIZATION: The ALS Association - DC/MD/VA Chapter

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Development and Events Intern will have an opportunity to work directly with The ALS Association DC/MD/VA Chapter Event Coordinator on various events aspects including event logistics, corporate sponsorship, some fundraising, and more. Currently we are seeking qualified candidates for Spring and Summer volunteer internship positions for our 2014 Walk to Defeat ALS program. There will be eight walks happening in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia area this season. The Intern will have the opportunity not only to work in an office setting, but also on site at the events.

OUR MISSION: Leading the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig's Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support. ESSENTIAL INTERN FUNCTIONS:

1. Assist Event Coordinator and ALS staff in daily event planning and production needs

2. Work on operational and logistical tasks as well as community outreach and development

3. Assist Event Coordinator with recruitment, Kick Off Meetings, and other special events

4. Offer impeccable customer service to all event participants and prospective participants

5. Perform other related duties as assigned by management

6. Moderate to heavy clerical work

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong organizational and interpersonal skills

2. Demonstrated project management skills, including ability to manage and prioritize projects with multiple and often competing deadlines, and ability to work under pressure

3. Proven ability to deliver high-quality customer service

4. Ability to work independently, under supervision, and in a team-based and goal-oriented environment

5. Skilled with PC (specifically Word and Excel), Microsoft Office and Social Media (Facebook/Twitter)

6. Ability to maintain confidentiality

7. Ability to communicate with employees and other agency contacts in a courteous and professional manner

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Upper-class Undergraduates and Graduate Students preferred. Majors in Business, Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, Public Health, Philanthropic Studies, are beneficial but not required.

Description

The ALS Association - DC/MD/VA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of people living with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and their families in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. The ALS Association National Office and the ALS Association - DC/MD/VA Chapter operate under a shared mission: to support people living with ALS and to leave no stone unturned in the search for a cure. The ALS Association - DC/MD/VA is currently serving almost 700 people living with ALS and their families. These services include assistive technology devices, social worker visits, medical equipment loan closet, transportation grants, and many other services. All of the Chapter's services are provided free of charge to the families.
