The Organization

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.

The Internship

The American Red Cross offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate students unpaid internship opportunities at our Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in chapters across the country through our Summer Internship Program. Interns are matched with a specific department where they work on advancing critical projects.

The overall aim of the program is to attract a pool of diverse, skilled, enthusiastic young professionals and provide them with an opportunity to build a long-term, substantive relationship with the Red Cross.

Currently we are looking for an Intern for our Little Rock, Arkansas Blood Donation Center. The Communications/Media Relations Intern will support the Communications Program Manager.

Interns will be assigned news releases, PSAs and other collaborative materials to produce on a weekly basis as part of public relations role to promote American Red Cross. They will also research answers to media inquiries, become familiar with interfacing with customers (donors, blood recipients and blood drive coordinators) and be responsible for researching to identify testimonial stories.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Journalism, Public Relations, English or related major
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment with a demonstrated ability to accomplish multiple task and meet deadlines
  • Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint video and photo editing software (Final Cut, Premiere, AVID) preferred. Experience with social media - particularly Twitter and Facebook
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, negotiation, and oral/written communication a must

Description

The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
