Community Literacy is a semester of weekly group tutoring sessions, during which volunteers tutor one-on-one in a group setting. For the duration of the semester, each tutor works with his/her assigned adult learner on English speaking, reading, and writing skills directly related to their life goals. Every week customized lesson plans are provided for each tutor/learner pair by the class Intern, who is also there to support tutors and learners throughout the semester. All tutoring is done in English so volunteers are not required to speak any other languages.
Requirements:Training is provided! We require all volunteers to be reliable, responsible, mature, friendly, and patient. A semester-long commitment to the program is required: you must attend your "class" every week (no more than 3 absences) during the entire semester. Our spring semester is January 26-May 9 and we are looking for tutors for the following classes:
- Monday nights, 6-8pm at Literacy Network (1118 S. Park St)
- Tuesday nights, 6-8pm at the Allied Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club (4619 Jenewein Rd)
- Wednesday mornings, 9-11am at Literacy Network
- Wednesday nights, 6-8pm at Literacy Network
- Thursday mornings, 10am-12 at Lussier Community Education Center (55 S. Gammon Rd)
- Saturday mornings, 9-11am at Literacy Network
Please note some sessions are located far from downtown and reliable transportation is needed. New tutors accepted into this program will be expected to attend Orientation/Training:
- CL Tutor Orientation: 6:00-7:00pm Monday January 19
- CL Tutor Training: 6:00-8:00pm Tuesday January 20 OR Wednesday January 21 (you choose which)
