The Refugee Outreach Program works with the local refugee community to develop and sustain programs that support self-sufficiency for local residents especially the Nepali-speaking Bhutanese living within walking distance of Holy Cross. Since September 2011, Holy Cross has provided ESL classes for elders of the local refugee community to help them improve their English language skills, to facilitate their participation with the larger community, and to provide instruction which may lead to citizenship. We are using materials from ProLiteracy provided generously to us from the National Book Fund. Volunteers would assist our teachers during classes in both one to one and group settings. We are also looking for volunteers to provide childcare during our classes. For more information, plus the days and times classes are held, please call 616-481-0245 or email donnateachesdance@yahoo.com.

The goal of the Holy Cross Episcopal and Ascension Lutheran Refugee Outreach Program is to work with the local refugee community to develop and sustain programs that support self-sufficiency for local residents especially the Nepali-speaking Bhutanese living within walking distance of Holy Cross. The Outreach Program has three primary objectives for its ESL and cultural literacy classes in 2014:
- to demonstrate an increase of at least 20 percent in basic literacy skills over the course of the year as measured by the Laubach Way to Reading Diagnostic Inventory and Student Reading Profile;
- to reach the maximum number of students our program can reasonably serve, an increase of at least 50 percent over spring 2013; and
- to measure student’s basic citizenship knowledge with the intent of identifying areas requiring further instruction.
