Volunteer opportunities range from administrative tasks such as data entry, to researching donor prospects and funding sources, to marketing and fundraising. When we are going into production or breaking down a set after a production, opportunities include backstage pre- and post-production tasks such as assisting with the construction and demolition of sets, painting, shopping for last minute props, taking trips to, for example, Home Depot to make exchanges or unanticipated purchases. There are often opportunities to work as House Manager (opens and closes the door to the theatre at the beginning and end of a show), Usher (handing out programs) and box office staff during a run. For those fluent in Yiddish, there is also the opportunity to read plays in the original Yiddish and write up impressions of the play for our literary department.

About New Worlds Theatre Project

Location:

670 W END AVE APT 16A, NEW YORK, NY 10025, US

Mission Statement

New Worlds Theatre Project was founded early in 2005 to make neglected Yiddish plays of literary and artistic merit accessible and exciting to diverse contemporary artists and audiences in English language productions meeting the highest standards of artistic excellence. Our goals are to demonstrate to the international theatre community how well the plays have stood the test of time and to see Yiddish plays performed in local languages on stages the world over alongside plays from other cultural legacies.

Description

We identify early 20th century Yiddish plays with literary and artistic merit, translate those plays into English, craft English language versions of the scripts, and, finally, produce them Off-Off Broadway. We make a special effort to cast our productions with culturally diverse actors and to market the productions to culturally diverse audiences. Exploring the human condition through the eyes of young intellectuals questioning their traditional upbringing and their place in the world, the universal themes in these plays reflect a tension between tradition and modernity that will continue to speak to diverse artists and audiences for generations to come.
