The Organization
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
The Internship
The American Red Cross offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate students unpaid internship opportunities at our Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in chapters across the country through our Summer Internship Program. Interns are matched with a specific department where they work on advancing critical projects.
The overall aim of the program is to attract a pool of diverse, skilled, enthusiastic young professionals and provide them with an opportunity to build a long-term, substantive relationship with the Red Cross.
Basic Qualifications:
- Undergraduate (Junior or Senior) pursuing a degree in Marketing, Communications or Business Major preferred, interest in online marketing required. Specialization in nonprofit and/or fundraising is preferred but not required.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite required, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent relationship skills and ability to work cross-functionally
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
The goals of the Consumer Fundraising department are to communicate the overall mission of the organization to the public as well as solicit donor response through financial contributions from responding to direct mail and online fundraising appeals.
The Consumer Fundraising Intern reports to the Marketing Operations Manager.
The intern will assist in executing online marketing campaigns for ARC. The intern will assist the marketing operations team with:
- Chapter data uploads
- Handling constituent contacts that come through the online fundraising inbox
- Supporting the Aprimo IP warm up campaigns
- Contributing to email QC efforts
- Managing an ongoing issues scorecard

Description
The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
