The Organization

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.

The Internship

The American Red Cross offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate students unpaid internship opportunities at our Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in chapters across the country through our Summer Internship Program. Interns are matched with a specific department where they work on advancing critical projects.

The overall aim of the program is to attract a pool of diverse, skilled, enthusiastic young professionals and provide them with an opportunity to build a long-term, substantive relationship with the Red Cross.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate (Junior or Senior) pursuing a degree in Communications or related major
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite required, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of popular and common web browsers
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent relationship skills and ability to work cross-functionally
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

The Service to the Armed Forces Emergency Communications Intern reports to the Director, Emergency Communications Center.

Summary:

The Service to the Armed Forces Emergency Communications Intern will assist the Director with the operation of the Service to the Armed Forces Center (SAFC) operation. Duties will include:

  • Collecting and publishing data essential to the SAFC mission
  • Gathering essential information from Red Cross chapters and stations and ensuring their contact data is up to date in the dovetail application
  • Assisting in continuing efforts to ensure the highest customer service standards are being met through the SAFC operation
  • Assisting with updating the Redbook resource and Dovetail chapter site information
  • Actively participate as a member of the training team to identify possible training material for service improvement
  • Review and follow-up with clients that have responded to the Client Satisfaction Survey

Description

The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
