The Organization
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
The Internship
The American Red Cross offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate students unpaid internship opportunities at our Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in chapters across the country through our Summer Internship Program. Interns are matched with a specific department where they work on advancing critical projects.
The overall aim of the program is to attract a pool of diverse, skilled, enthusiastic young professionals and provide them with an opportunity to build a long-term, substantive relationship with the Red Cross.
Basic Qualifications:
- Current undergraduate (Junior or Senior) pursuing a degree in Marketing or Business Administration with a concentration in marketing/communications.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite required, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience in nonprofit and/or fundraising is preferred but not required
- Knowledge of project management including research, planning, defining metrics, indentifying risks, tracking and synthesizing results
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent relationship skills and ability to work cross-functionally
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
The Consumer Fundraising Intern reports to the Senior Associate-Digital Fundraising.
The Consumer Fundraising department is seeking an intern to assist in executing integrated digital marketing efforts for the American Red Cross (ARC). The goals of the department are to communicate the overall mission of the organization to the public as well as solicit donor response through financial contributions from digital fundraising appeals. The intern will assist with the planning and implementation of the ARC digital fundraising efforts over the summer.
The intern will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Assisting with photo library research to use in marketing materials
- Organizing shipments of donor materials as needed
- Proofreading and editing marketing communications and content
- Consolidating best practices and ideas of other organizations and email best practices for the team to assess
- Facilitating marketing communication opt in/outs and approvals with the chapter network and subject matter experts
- Assisting with input of data into project management system
- Managing, organizing and consolidating master documents and calendars for internal department records
- Assisting with marketing ad hoc tasks where needed, including survey set up and scheduling

Description
The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
