This project began as a three year restoration & grant partnership between Kualoa Ranch and Hui o Ko'olaupoko . Although the grant period has ended, maintenance and continued outplanting of the project is critical to its success. The goals of the project include reducing sediment entering Hakipuu Stream and Kane'ohe Bay and increasing habitat for native aquatic species such as opae kala'ole and 'o'opu.

Volunteers will be involved in clearing invasive plant species from the semi-remote mauka spring and stream area using handsaws and hand pulling small weeds as well as planting native species and maintaining a small lo'i within the project.

Mission Statement

Protecting ocean health by restoring the aina: mauka to makai.

Description

The mission of Hui o Koolaupoko is to protect ocean health by restoring the aina: mauka to makai.

Throughout the Koolaupoko moku (Makapuu to Kualoa) in Windward Oahu, land-based pollution is a leading threat to ocean health and resources. Hui o Koolaupoko (HOK) addresses these problems by being a leader in community-based watershed management; working with communities to improve water quality through ecosystem restoration, implementing low-impact retrofits (LIR), reducing non-point source pollution and developing education, outreach and volunteer programs for all ages.

Along with HOK’s restoration work in Koolaupoko, the organization provides services including technical consultation, restoration design, trainings and watershed restoration capacity building throughout Oahu and the State of Hawaii.
