The Organization
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
The Internship
The American Red Cross offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate students unpaid internship opportunities at our Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in chapters across the country through our Summer Internship Program. Interns are matched with a specific department where they work on advancing critical projects.
The overall aim of the program is to attract a pool of diverse, skilled, enthusiastic young professionals and provide them with an opportunity to build a long-term, substantive relationship with the Red Cross.
Basic Qualifications:
- Current undergraduate (Junior or Senior) or graduate pursuing a degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Business, or English
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; advanced research skills using online search engines; general social media use
- Preferred knowledge of Cision, Vocus and/or other media database; Skype, Radian 6
- Strong written communication skills
- Fluent Spanish is a plus
The Communications Intern reports to the Media Relations Director.
The intern will be working with the communications department with a focus on media relations. The intern will be assigned daily activities including:
- Answering the media line to screen, vet and relay media requests for the media relations team
- Researching media outlets and reporters and providing analysis of coverage. Intern will also research potential outlets for the team to pitch
- Creating briefing documents, presentations, reports, stories, blog posts and other materials used by the communications team
- Creating daily social media updates using social media monitoring technology
- Answering posts on the Red Cross Facebook page and Twitter account
- Filtering potential online content submissions and posting them to our blog
- Other duties as assigned

Description
The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
