The Organization

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.

The Internship

The American Red Cross offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate students unpaid internship opportunities at our Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in chapters across the country through our Summer Internship Program. Interns are matched with a specific department where they work on advancing critical projects.

The overall aim of the program is to attract a pool of diverse, skilled, enthusiastic young professionals and provide them with an opportunity to build a long-term, substantive relationship with the Red Cross.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate (Sophomore, Junior, or Senior) or graduate pursuing a degree in Business, Management, Communications, Marketing, Political Science, History, English, or Foreign language
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office, Outlook, web browsers, multiple social media platforms
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Fluent Spanish is a plus

The Services to Armed Forces Policy & Program Development Intern reports to the Senior Associate, Services to Armed Forces Policy & Program Development.

Summary:

The Service to Armed Forces (SAF) Policy & Program Development (PPD) Intern will assist the PPD team in creating and improving SAF programs and policies throughout our 500 chapters, as well as 50 military installations on which we have a presence.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the SAF staff in the field to collect stories to be used for Marketing, Communication, Development and Social Media purposes
  • Write multiple items (brochures, case statements, booklets) to be used for Marketing, Communication, Development and Social Media purposes
  • Work on process improvements as well as survey distribution and analytics for SAF Reconnection Workshops, which are small-group, licensed professional-led workshops to help military families transition when a service member comes home
  • Work on the Red Cross involvement with the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project
  • Work with the Youth and Young Adults team to create more SAF volunteer opportunities for younger Red Crossers
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Description

The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
