The Organization

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.

The Internship

The American Red Cross offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate students unpaid internship opportunities at our Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in chapters across the country through our Summer Internship Program. Interns are matched with a specific department where they work on advancing critical projects.

The overall aim of the program is to attract a pool of diverse, skilled, enthusiastic young professionals and provide them with an opportunity to build a long-term, substantive relationship with the Red Cross.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate (Junior or Senior) pursuing a degree in Business, Communications, Non-Profit Management, Journalism, Human Services, or related field.
  • Strong proven writing, editing and research skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft office and a variety of social media networks

The Disaster Fundraising Intern reports to the Manager of Disaster Fundraising.

The intern will be an integral part of Disaster Fundraising team and will help the Disaster Fundraising team at Red Cross National Headquarters work with field fundraisers across the country to prepare and respond to domestic disasters. On average, the Disaster Fundraising team launches 30 campaigns in response to large-scale disasters, and works on an annual basis to train and help Red Cross fundraisers develop plans to rapidly increase their fundraising in response to disasters.

The main duties for the Disaster Fundraising Intern will include:

  • Crafting donor materials (i.e. email updates and case statements)
  • Serving as a representative on conference calls with on-ground Disaster Relief Operations
  • Participating in meetings
  • Updating integral guidance and materials
  • Helping prioritize and coordinate solicitation of donated products
  • Assisting with the In-Kind Donations team and International Disaster Fundraising team as needed
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Description

The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
