The Organization

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.

The Internship

The American Red Cross offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate students unpaid internship opportunities at our Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in chapters across the country through our Summer Internship Program. Interns are matched with a specific department where they work on advancing critical projects.

The overall aim of the program is to attract a pool of diverse, skilled, enthusiastic young professionals and provide them with an opportunity to build a long-term, substantive relationship with the Red Cross.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate with an active interest in government relations
  • Consideration for Political Science, Government, Public Policy or History majors
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft office and Internet Explorer

The Government Relations Intern reports to the Director of Government Relations.

To support the work of the Government Relations team, the Intern will:

  • Attend Congressional hearings
  • Coordinate American Red Cross briefings on Capitol Hill
  • Participate in drop-offs to Congressional & Governor’s offices
  • Research and track state & federal legislation pertaining to American Red Cross activities
  • Participate in coalition meetings with other national organizations
  • Communicate with Chapters, service areas, blood regions & other departments throughout the American Red Cross
  • Participate in DOC (Disaster Operations Center) briefings
  • Assist in the creation of briefing materials for Red Cross senior leadership meetings with government officials and agencies

Description

The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
