Imagine being 13 again. Did you know then that you could succeed in your profession? Or become an urban planner? A publicist? A web designer?

If you’re like most of us, you probably didn’t know what your future held in store. Spark apprenticeships bring underserved middle school students out of the classroom and into the workplace for individualized mentoring that results in educational success and powerful career ambitions.

Here are a few details about what it means to be a mentor to a Spark student:

  • Complete the on-boarding process which includes a mentor application, background check, and information/orientation session
  • Meet your student during Spark’s Match Night at his or her school
  • Host your student at your workplace for two hours each week in the afternoon for 10 weeks
  • Develop a project with your student that he or she can present at "Spark Discovery Night" at the end of the mentoring term
  • Share your workday, your network, and your profession
  • Attend Spark Discovery Night to support your student and learn from other students
  • Engage with Spark’s knowledgeable, professional and accessible staff for apprenticeship support

Mission Statement

Spark’s mission is to provide life-changing apprenticeships to youth in underserved communities across the United States.

Description

What does it take to change the trajectory of a child’s life? At Spark, we believe it takes a mentor, career exposure and skills that bridge classroom and workplace learning. As a nationwide mentoring, high school readiness and workforce development nonprofit, we match students at risk of dropping out of school in tailored apprenticeships with mentors who can help them see how their interests, career goals and education intersect in a real workplace. With more engaged students and improved graduation rates, Spark apprenticeships change lives and communities.
