An American Oystercatcher Tends Its Eggs
American Oystercatchers are a species of concern and nest on Masonboro Island during the spring.

Did you know that many shorebirds lay their eggs directly into a shallow indentation in the sand? This leaves the eggs highly vulnerable to being walked on by Masonboro Island Reserve visitors.

In order to help protect these eggs and thus ensure the future of these shorebird species, we are recruiting volunteers to help post nesting sites during the 2014 season. This involves setting up a temporary structure that will alert Reserve users to the nests' locations and reduce the chances of the eggs being crushed.

If you are interested in helping but unable to contruct the enclosures, we are still looking for participants who would be willing to monitor the enclosures on Masonboro Island Reserve (about every other week on your own schedule) to ensure that they are good condition.

Mission Statement

The mission of the N.C. Coastal Reserve & National Estuarine Research Reserve is "To promote informed management and stewardship of North Carolina’s estuarine and coastal habitats through research, education, and example."

Description

The Wilmington office of NCCR and NCNERR manages the Masonboro Island, Zeke's Island, and Bird Island Reserve sites. These natural areas are three of ten sites in North Carolina that are protected to serve as examples of our state's natural and undeveloped estuarine habitats.

These sites are preserved in order to allow these coastal ecosystems to be available as natural outdoor labortories where scientists, students, and the general public can learn about coastal processes, functions, and influences that shape and sustain the coastal area.
