Position Summary

Visitor Services volunteers are an essential part of the Museum's frontline, ensuring that all visitors have a positive and enjoyable experience in the Museum. Volunteers welcome and orient Museum visitors and school groups in a friendly and helpful manner to promote positive visitor experiences and a culture of inclusion. Visitor Services volunteers are trained and prepared to answer a variety of questions, including those about Museum history, programming, exhibitions, and general questions regarding the Museum, Cafe, and Museum Shop. Visitor Services volunteers must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.

Major Responsibilities

Visitor Experience

  • Provide excellent customer service and demonstrate a commitment to creating a positive experience for all visitors
    • Welcomes and orients visitors and answer questions during public hours
    • Serve as initial point of contact for visitors attending or participating in programs
  • Fields visitor comments with care and/or directs and reports those comments to appropriate personnel
    • Maintains clean and tidy Visitor Services desk
  • Maintains awareness of membership program and member benefits to promote membership to visitors
  • Ensures Visitor Services is stocked with current Museum printed matter (brochures, announcements, maps, etc.)

Guided and Self-Guided Tours

  • Welcomes chaperones, and tour participants
  • Identifies and embraces opportunities to support docents and Museum protection officers during tours

Key Competencies

Customer Service: Responds promptly to visitor needs, solicits visitor feedback to improve service, responds to requests for service and assistance, meets commitments

Oral Communication: Speaks clearly, listens and gets clarification, responds well to questions and demonstrates presentation skills

Commitment

After completing an initial training and orientation session, volunteers are expected to work a weekly or bi-weekly three-hour shift of their choice for at least one year.
