ORGANIZATION: L'Arche Spokane

Live-In Assistants are people who choose to live in a L’Arche home with adults who have intellectual disabilities, the "core members" of the community, sharing life, laughter, and friendship. They offer hands-on assistance with daily living skills, finances, and health care; they also are open to being cared for by the core people.

Mission Statement

  • Make known the gifts of people with developmental disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationships;
  • Foster an environment in community that responds to the changing needs of our members, while being faithful to the core values of our founding story; and
  • Engage in our diverse cultures, working together toward a more human society.

Description

Founded by Jean Vanier in France in 1964, L’Arche communities bear witness to the reality that persons with intellectual disabilities possess inherent qualities of welcome, wonderment, spirituality, and friendship. We make explicit the dignity of every human being by building inclusive communities of faith and friendship where people with and without intellectual disabilities share life together.
