About the Internship:

POTS’ Next-Step Services include Case Management and a Legal Clinic to help individuals to not only address crises but to take the steps necessary to stabilize and improve their lives. These services are designed to increase the resources available to Bronx residents to live stable and healthy lives.

As an intern in POTS Next-Step Services Program, you will work with both Case Managers and Lawyers to assist individuals to successfully apply for public benefits, mediate disputes with job centers, fight eviction proceedings, and refer clients to other community based organization that provide services we are unable to provide.

CASE MANAGEMENT

Case Managers serve low-income families and individuals in the Bronx community. POTS doors are open to all and are free of charge.

Case Managers provide individualized support for clients. Where appropriate, they utilize POTS’ onsite capabilities to submit an application for SNAP benefits. Case Managers also provide clients with information regarding public assistance, social security disability, health insurance, and a host of other issues. Following submission of a SNAP application, Case Managers provide follow up advocacy and link clients with legal services should they be unfairly denied. In addition, Case Managers utilize POTS’ established referral network to help them access services which POTS is unable to provide directly. Such services include detoxification and substance abuse programs, employment programs, financial counseling, free tax preparation, educational programs, etc.

LEGAL CLINIC:

POTS Legal Clinic serves low-income residents of the Bronx. POTS practice is primarily focused on public benefits issues and eviction prevention. POTS does a high volume of administrative hearings throughout New York City and summary proceedings in Bronx Housing Court.

Legal Interns assist POTS’ attorneys through client intake, case preparation, informal advocacy, hearings and post-hearing follow-up. Interns (after 3-6 months) could be given an opportunity to present and argue a case before an administrative law judge.
